Today marks the start of the 2017 Atlantic hurricane season (June 1 — Nov. 30), so make sure you’re prepared.
Be sure to review personal evacuation and emergency plans with your family. As part of your personal preparedness, you should have an emergency kit (make sure nothing in it is expired) and a method for monitoring emergency alerts from local officials.
You should also think about making arrangements for your children in case one or more schools close and we remain open.
Ready.gov and the Red Cross both provide checklists for at-home preparedness and emergency response, as well as recommended items for an emergency kit. If you haven’t planned for an emergency in the past, you can use these online resources as a starting point. Also, the Florida Department of Financial Services provides a toll-free insurance helpline (1-877-693-5236) that connects you with insurance experts who can help file claims should your property incur damage from a storm.
Remember, the safety of you and your family is always the first priority!
