Start Planning Now for Your 2021 Health Plan Needs
Sometimes the same health plan works for you year after year. Other times, changes in your life call for a new one. Either way, we’ve got you covered.
If you’re under 65 and buy insurance on your own, it’s time to start thinking about what you need for 2021. A big part of that is understanding how you’ve used your health plan this year and thinking about how your needs may change next year, said Scott Bryant, senior director of consumer sales for Florida Blue.
Maybe one of your children will be too old to be on your family plan or maybe you’re having a baby next year, he said. Perhaps someone in your family has developed a new health condition that could require specialized care.
Will your primary care doctor remain in your plan’s network or will you need to change Florida Blue plans if you want to stay with that physician? Think about that for the specialists, pharmacies and the hospitals you use, as well. Those factors and more are important to consider when selecting your plan for next year, Bryant said.
With so many people losing their jobs or have reduced income because of COVID-19 issues, you may need to consider a different plan for 2021. That’s one of the many reasons to talk to our agents about Affordable Care Act plans, where you may be able to get help paying for your them. Most people do.
Bryant said there are new plans available for 2021, all of which include Better You Strides, our health and wellness rewards program where each adult on the plan can earn up to $500 in rewards.

You’ll get your 2021 health plan benefits and coverage package in the mail in the coming weeks. Members who bought an Affordable Care Act plan from Florida Blue and are not receiving a subsidy will receive theirs before Oct. 1. Those who have plans with a subsidy will get it before Nov. 1 and it will include their estimated financial help for 2021. The actual subsidy will be available Nov. 1.
Our agents can help you find out if you qualify for financial help. If you do, they can help you select or renew your plan Nov. 1-Dec. 15. If you don’t, you can buy your 2021 plan from Oct. 1-Dec. 31.
Here are ways you can prepare for choosing your 2021 plan:
- Review the benefits package you get in the mail to see if it meets your needs for 2021.
- Log in to your account on floridablue.com or the Florida Blue app and use the plan comparison tool for a side-by-side review of your 2020 and 2021 benefits and monthly payments. This is where you’ll see your new subsidy, if you’re eligible. If you like what you see, you can click on “renew my plan with this coverage” and you’re set for next year. You can also schedule a health plan review to talk about options.
- If you have insurance through the Marketplace, you need to update your application every two years or if you have changes in life, including a change in income or the number of people in your home. Your agent can do this for you during your review. Doing this helps you get the maximum financial help.
- Remember that your January bill will arrive in December and is due by Dec. 31.
