[Editor's note: This post was guest-authored by Stella the Whale, a life-size mural of an Atlantic right whale painted by the artist Wyland. The Wyland Foundation organized her 700-mile migration which has taken her to schools across the state in an effort to raise awareness of the importance of protecting the environment, setting goals, and being healthy. Florida Blue is proud sponsor of this program.]
What an amazing journey!
I'm nearing my destination of the Right Whale Festival
in Jacksonville, Florida. I can almost see it! From there I rejoin my pod of right whales. I can't wait to tell everyone what I've seen.
But there's still more to do. Together with Florida Blue, the Florida YMCA, Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute, Protect Florida Whales License Plate, Kids Eat Right, and the Wyland Foundation, we've shown more than 6,000 kids across the state of Florida how important it is to take care of our environmental health and our personal health. We've traveled to more than twenty cities, starting in Key Largo, and learned that kids really care about what's happening in the world. We've learned about setting goals for ourselves - whether it's my goal of reaching my destination in Jacksonville or the kids setting goals to do better in school. The kids have learned how important good nutrition is for whales and humans. And how we all need to work together for the future of the planet.
I have to say I'm honored that all of the schools wanted to take a picture with me. Everywhere I went I felt like a star. You can see the photos here
. Even Wyland, the world famous artist and environmental hero, joined in. He created the Protect Florida Whales License plate. Every time someone buys a Protect Florida Whales License plate it helps programs like this reach schools across the state. So thanks to everyone who's helped out! You know who you are.
Well, I have to get ready for the big celebration on Nov. 17 at the Right Whale Festival in Jacksonville. Everyone is invited to attend. We'll have folks from Florida Blue, Harbor Branch Oceanographic, Kids Eat Right and the Wyland Foundation - all welcoming me! Can you imagine that? My parents would be proud!
