Not long ago, we heard an employee say that a wellness session led by  Florida Blue medical director, Dr. Carmella Sebastian, was so informative (and hysterical!) that she and the other attendees talked about it for days. Informative and hysterical? We had to learn more. Luckily, after the social media team met personally with Dr. Sebastian, we got so much more than an interview—we picked up a new author for the blog! We are excited to introduce you to Dr. Carmella Sebastian, who will be writing for us under her preferred title, “Dr. Carm”.
How would I help as a medical director and not a treating physician?

Why did you go into medicine and then move to the corporate world? I really wanted to help people. When I was approached to work for an insurance company back in 1993, at first I was wondering how I would continue to help people the way that I did in my Internal Medicine practice.   How would I help as a medical director and not a treating physician? I quickly found out that patients really needed (and continue to need) help with navigation through the complex health care industry. They need an advocate. So, for the past twenty years I’ve concentrated on assuring the delivery of quality health care, appropriate use of medical services and my current passion, wellness and health promotion. What unique perspective on health, wellness or understanding your Florida Blue membership will you offer our social community? I have a very simplistic and direct way of both approaching health, wellness and the industry as a whole, and also communicating about those subjects. I don’t like to use big complicated words because that only confuses people and makes the whole complex process even more troublesome. Also, I am a health care service consumer. I always try to put myself in the place of my audience and usually either I or a friend or family member has been there. That is how I will approach the readers.
"Life is funny and as such, I can’t help but have a great time living and learning"

Because you are so funny, we want to know —who makes you laugh? First and foremost my family. Both my mom and dad (now both dearly departed) were funny and irreverent. I find humor everywhere. Tell me that a simple trip through the drive-thru fast food place is not hysterically funny. Life is funny and as such, I can’t help but have a great time living and learning. Be sure to visit our blog often for informative (and often funny!) posts from Dr. Carm. And leave us a comment here on a topic you’d like to see her address.

This is an interesting post but I saw Dr. Carm on tv today giving 5 things people should know when they get insurance through AFA. Common sense issues useless for her to even mention. However, I don't understand how all these people advertising on tv getting insurance for $74/month, $105/month, etc. etc. can say they do. I believe it is false advertising. I am fortunate to have BCBS for many years, but husband had to drop when economy went down and he lost his business. He has not worked steady for two years. Last year he only made $8,000 for the entire year. That is below poverty. But the quotes he gets for that is $400/month. You KNOW that is not possible. I wish Dr. Carm had spoken about that!
