Thinking about surgery? New program for Medicare members helps you prepare
Whether you need a hip replacement or something a little less invasive, hearing the news that you need surgery can be stressful and unsettling not only for you, but for your loved ones as well.
Chances are you’ll have a flurry of questions. But should you turn to the internet to research options including the pros and cons and the risks and benefits of the surgery?
While it’s important to spend time learning as much as you can about the procedure—even getting to know the people who will be taking care of you—information on the internet can be overwhelming and sometimes confusing.
There’s a lot to take in. Staying focused on what lies ahead, being informed and understanding your options will help you feel empowered to make smart decisions.
That’s why we’re offering Florida Blue Medicare health plan members like you, access to an easy-to-use, online program called Welvie My Surgery℠ at no additional cost. The program works to help you decide on, prepare for and even plan for a smooth recovery after surgery.
It doesn’t matter what type of elective surgery you’re having or whether you need it now or later, when you and your loved ones feel comfortable, supported by your health care team and armed with knowledge in advance, it’s a formula for a favorable outcome.
Follow these important steps to help prepare for your surgery:
- Learn as much as you can about the surgery, including alternative options
- Speak up and ask questions
- Find out what type of anesthesia will be needed
- Find out if there are certain foods/drinks you should avoid
- What should you expect post surgery, include/recovery time frame
- What medications will be needed
Lastly, be good to yourself and follow your doctor’s advice. Surgery can be stressful on your body and mind. Relax, get plenty of sleep and think positive.
