The Ultimate Sacrifice

Originally called “Decoration Day,” the first day of remembrance for our service members was held in 1868. Memorial Day as we know it did not become a designated federal holiday until June 28, 1968, and with that designation began the tradition of a three-day, long weekend.

On Memorial Day we remember and honor all those who fought for the freedoms we are so proud to enjoy on a daily basis. The last Monday in May also marks the unofficial start of summer with celebrations that include barbeques, gatherings full of family and friends, and time spent outdoors.

This weekend as you gather on the beach, pool or at a local park, take a moment to reflect on those who paid the ultimate price for our American dream. If you know a service member, thank them for their service. If you are a service member, we thank you for your commitment and love for our Country.

Here are a few select activities happening across our beautiful state in celebration of Memorial Day.
