Health Care Disparity and Cultural Competency
At Florida Blue, we recognize the importance of providing health care that is culturally competent. In support of our mission “to help people and communities achieve better health”, we continue to work toward achieving equitable and quality health care for all our members, as well as the communities we serve, by reducing health care disparities, enhancing health literacy, and providing culturally and linguistically appropriate services.
What is "culturally competent health care?"
The National Center of Cultural Competence, a leading research institution and thought leader, defines cultural competence as “a set of congruent behaviors, attitudes and policies that come together in a system, agency, or among professionals and enables that system, agency, or those professionals to work effectively in cross-cultural situations.” Cultural competence is one component of a solution to health disparities.
Florida Blue is partnering with health care professionals to improve cultural competence. Together, we will be better prepared to understand the needs of a very diverse population and customize health care to meet the patient’s cultural, linguistic and social needs. To support health care professionals, Florida Blue creates, adapts or collects valuable resources.
