The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will begin issuing new cards to people with Medicare in April 2019.
What Is Changing?
CMS wants to help protect people with Medicare by removing private information from their Medicare cards. They’re making important changes to reduce your risk of fraud and identify theft.
• New Medicare Number: The Social Security number on your card will be replaced with a more secure, unique combination of letters and numbers.
• Protected Information: In addition to removing the Social Security number, CMS also will remove the person’s gender and signature from the card.
Why Do I Need to Know This Now?
You don’t have to do anything to get your new card and new number. Receiving your new Medicare card will be as easy as waiting for the mail to arrive. Take a moment now to make sure the Social Security Administration has your correct mailing information.
• Visit ssa.gov/myaccount, or
• Call 1-800-772-1213 (TTY: 1-800-325-0778).
Not all people with Medicare will receive these new cards at the same time. Don’t be concerned if friends, neighbors or even a spouse receive their new cards before you do. All members are expected to have their new cards by April 2019.
