Improving the Health Care System: The Sapphire Awards Recognizing Excellence and Innovation in Community Health
2013 Sapphire Awards and Symposium
The Sapphire Awards are designed to recognize and promote excellence and innovation in community health across Florida. This year’s Sapphire Awards and Symposium featured experts from Florida and across the nation who addressed trends, emerging issues and best practices on such timely topics as child health and wellness, access to care and health care reform. The two-day event featured technical workshops focused on: strategic planning; fundraising and development; program evaluation; PR, media relations and social media; and nonprofit advocacy. Furthermore, representatives from leading national and Florida-based foundations were present and shared their insights on effective grant writing, program management, measurement and evaluation.
Dr. John Lumpkin, SVP and Director, Health Care Group at The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and Patrick Geraghty, Chairman and CEO of Florida Blue, were this year’s keynote speakers. While Dr. Lumpkin’s address focused on a funder’s perspective on health care and health care reform, Mr. Geraghty discussed Florida Blue’s commitment to community and mission to help people and communities achieve better health.
The Sapphire Awards and Symposium is Florida’s only statewide event that recognizes organizations, programs and individuals that have demonstrated excellence and innovation in community health. Since its inception, 45 individuals and/or health-focused nonprofits have been honored and over $2.4 million have been awarded in recognition of their achievements.
At this year’s event, one individual, one program and two organizations from across the state were recognized for excellence and innovation in community health. Below, please find videos and presentations from the various sessions that were held during the two-day event, as well as the profiles and videos of the 2013 honorees
