Improve the Health Care System: Sapphire Award - Recognizing Excellence in Community Health Innovation
2012 Sapphire Award Symposium and Presentation
The Sapphire Award is designed to recognize and promote excellence in community health programming and leadership in Florida. This year’s Sapphire Award Symposium featured nationally-and regionally-recognized experts who addressed trends, emerging issues and best practices related to such timely topics as health literacy, child health and wellness, access to care, health care reform, sustainability and more. Three pediatric mobile health units representing the best in primary, behavioral, dental and vision care were on display. And representatives from some of Florida’s leading foundations were present to share their insights on effective grant writing and program management, measurement and evaluation.
Leighton Ku, PhD, MPH, director, Center for Health Policy Research at The George Washington University (DC), was this year’s keynote speaker. His address, “Access to Care, Reform and the Health Safety Net,” provided a national perspective on the impact the pending changes due out of Washington would have on the uninsured and health safety net providers, and what they could do to prepare and respond.
The Sapphire Award was created by the BCBSF Foundation in 2005 to recognize excellence in community health. Since its inception, 37 health-focused nonprofits have been honored and nearly $2.2 million has been awarded in recognition of their achievements.
At this year’s event, five additional organizations from across the state were recognized, as well as three outstanding individuals for their personal and professional contributions. Please see below for a complete list of the 2012 Sapphire Award honorees.
